Swine flu reaches Vienna

Posted on:November 11 2009

On my way through the inner city of Vienna, I saw (independently) about 3 people wearing respiratory masks. They could have been Michael Jackson fans, but I guess they were wearing them for fear of the Swine flu.
I guess it's not possible to sue the media for exaggerating this disease?

Amen, here in Portugal it's the same. The media just exaggerated it. All the TV news were filled with swine flu stories. Jeez...

Wikipedia clearly says that 1 in 40 may die by swine flu and human immunity is generally sufficient for this disease. It is just that it spreads rapidly.
Also wikipedia clearly says to wear mask in front of pigs:)

Here in India aslo it was most talked about thing for some days when a city reported 13 deaths and was kind of quarantined.

My 9-month old son had H1N1 and was hospitalized for a week because of the viral pneumonia it caused. His fever went over 105 F and persisted for 10 days. It was scary stuff. Note that this was in the US.

haha, you sure got the targeting for this one, the ad on the right is an ad for Bing and searching with "measles symptoms", with horribly photoshopped pox on the kids

yeah from all actual reports, this is less dangerous than generic seasonal flu, people are just sensationalizing it because its a new strain thats actually spreading. remember all the hoopla about a new avian flu variant a few years ago, that never ended up actually spreading? it is still influenza, which can be pretty harmful, but its mainly just sensationalism

I read on Wikipedia that the H1N1 virus also caused the "Spanish Flu" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu) during WW-1. I just hope that it doesn't turn that bad this time (though I really think that the media hyped it). But the world had other problems to care about in 1918 I think ;) . And: I've been on vacation to California last May when the Swineflu still was in Mexico, and: I'm still alive. I also read that way more people die from the normal seasonal flu each year and that this version wouldn't even have been noticed if it came in the "normal flu-season".

H1N1 isn't any one single virus, Brainsaw, if thats what youre thinking. its a whole type. common seasonal flu is also most often H1N1. Swine Flu is simply a new strain of H1N1

Yes, I know that. But I think the worst part is (or was) the "media hype".

Oh, heard in the news today that here in Germany the first person died after he got his immunisation. They still have to figure out why he died but (what a surprise) it seems that you don't get invulnerable *that way*.
