I guess I wouldn't earn any Money as Animator

From time to time, I am interested in the way 3d artists create their beautiful graphics, and I try to mimic them, trying to model nice 3d scenes or to draw some cool textures. I usually fail miserably when I am doing something graphics related which does not involve programming (example1, example2), but at least it's very interesting for me and I learn a lot of new things.

Last weekend, I tried myself as animator. I created a 3d model (it was a goblin-like monster): created a skeleton of joints, attached weights to the vertices and animated all of it. After a few hours, I proudly presented it to my girlfriend, animated with a nice walkcycle. The result: "Oh, is it injured?" - "Hm.. what?" - "Is it.. sick?" - "No! It's walking! It's a walking goblin!" And then I was laughed at for this bold claim. :/

Because of safety reasons (both for the eyes of the readers of this blog and for the self-esteem of the author), I'm not going to present a movie of the animation here. :)


Oh, come on!!!!! Do us a favor, show it. At least in wire frame mode. Really!!! I love Irrlicht and about to start an FPS game and it would be very cool to see that NIKO the Great is human too. Looking forward to see your model.

C'mon show us please! Its like you're telling a joke and don't want to tell the end :-D

Don't expect too much from yourself Niko. You didn't know how a 3D engine was constructed either at the time you wrote your first hello world. Look at you now...
Try to take a step back from your work and be critical about it. Ask yourself the question what's wrong about it and try to improve that. If you can do that, you're already half way. The other half is to observe the artwork of others and think about how you could improve that. Also observe the real world more closely, don't see things but look at things.

This, and looooots and looooots of practice practice practice will get you there :-)

I am not a modeller either, but as I don't have a modeller for my project I am doing it myself. As it's not as complicated as a walking goblin it's OK (my opinion), but still I'm fascinated when I see some of the screenshots in the Irrlicht forum. But: I can live with it, being a lonesome-game-coder in my free time ;)

Please show us!!!
It would be nice to have a chance to see how people start, improve and master their skills. It's a little bit frustrating to see only the high-end results of coders/artists/etc. after practicing for years in the dark on their own:-)

Aww !! Show us ! hehehe i mena you could have contered with something like "ehm, yes its walking that way because that Monster simply had already the need to pee when you started modelling it and now that it can walk the expression got somehow , dragged along" ... hehehe :)

ps. i suck at modelling too - i used to be a better 3d artist than programmer in the past, however this shifted somehow with the "programmers mind" i guess. As an artist you look/think in different aspects and not necessairly as systematic as you go on things as a good programmer.

welcome in the club!When i need a model (my friends are 3D modelers but they never create a model for me) i try to model something with milkshape, the only program that i'm able to use but results are bad bad bad :( Maybe as programmer involved in an idea of game i lack of the patience needed for a serious model/design activity;plus the haste to see working a ready model and logic makes the results horrible!
