Interesting - Press Freedom Index

Posted on:March 30 2009

The Press Freedom index 2008 by Reporters without borders is quite interesting. The best rated countries are Iceland, Luxembourg and Norway, followed by mostly European countries, and countries which are currently not at war. Maybe this is a good list to read if you plan to emigrate :)

Austria - where I live - is ranked 14th, while Germany is 20th. I guess the position of Germany will get worse this year, since the german government is currently implementing a blackbox Internet censorship system and raiding the houses of people criticising this, like they did with the owner of the wikileaks.de domain.

The USA are ranked 36th, the last Countries are Burma, Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea.

Comments:

The press may be free, but I can see my country ranked 17th. The press here is such a load of bollocks. Articles are mainly written by major political parties, pushing people to one side or the other, even if they seem to be exercising free press.

Oh, but it gets worse.
Italy, where I live, is ranked 44, below Uruguay.
I guess that happens when the prime minister is also the owner of 3 national tv stations (plus the 3 public ones when in charge), 50% the press and can indirectly control the other 50% because, duh, he also controls the advertising business.

I guess even the number one country still has serious problems... forget that list and trust only yourself. Read as much as you can from various different sources.
