EEE Update

Posted on:April 28 2008

I still like my eee PC.
But one big drawback is that I didn't get Truecrypt to work on it yet because I don't want to install gcc and all the other dependent libraries on the small hard disk just to compile Truecrypt from sources. And I don't trust some hungarian private website as only source for a precompiled eee-compatible Truecrypt version. But I think I can live without this software for now.
The second drawback: I can't use the eee PC to do my C++ programming work, although there is no direct technical obstacle. The problem is that if you are developing a game with 3d graphics which needs a slight bigger screen resolution than 800x480, you run into troubles. :)

You should make your app more flexible and allow it to adapt to such screens :-P
Which performance do you get when using Irrlicht on the eeePc?

haven't tried it out yet, but should be usable at least, there are some preinstalled OpenGL based 3D games on it, and they are running at quite playable framerates.

That's interesting,... I'm sure it's a big difference in work area if you're used to working with a fancy multiple monitor desktop setup. Though it should be usable enough to code in.
Generally, when I have to work with smaller resolutions, I use a window manager that doesn't take up much extra space (eg: fluxbox without taskbar), and a text editor or IDE that maximizes the work area (eg: vim). Without taskbars, menubars, and other GUI widgets cluttering your screen, you can make use of the full screen area to display/edit your code. This is where it comes in handy to be less dependent on mouse based GUI's and be more familiar with systems that can be completely controlled via keyboard shortcuts.

It seems you are so NOT the target audience of the the eee PC. This laptop is made for internet surfing casual users who want to satisfy their gadget lust. Not for programmers writing apps and testing engines on it :) such a fun though! Always pushing the edge.

Moka5 has an EEE pc vm image. Useful for trying it out, but it might also be useful for building TrueCrypt without a lot of swapping around.
