Discrimination? What's that?

Posted on:February 08 2008

Just coming back from the view of a real estate which was offered for rent in Vienna. And the dialog with the estate agent was quite 'interesting'. Because when we asked what kind of other people were renting in the same house, the agent misinterpreted this and started to smile as if he would know what we really wanted to know and said:

"People we never accept are the following: Black people, muslims, people from Turkey and all arabic countries. And never black people, did I mention black people? So you don't need to get worried."

We were really speechless, and didn't know what to say. We knew that a lot of homeowners in Vienna are like this, but they would never and that openly admit this.

God knows wen this discrimination will end. I think only discrimination should be between good and evil, after all no one want criminal or trouble some neighbours. ethnic cleansing is not my favourite computer game for that matter also I dont subscribe to it in real life. How easily some people forget that every one is first a human then anything else.

Sometimes I am almost ashamed of being from Austria. It seems that some people in this country never learn. Now don't get me wrong, I know that not everyone here is like that, and of course there is some hope... But this is really embarrassing.

Holy crap. They probably wouldn't like me because I have a dark beard, and was once mistaken for a local In Turkey after spending some time there. I'm obviously a terrorist.

I find it deeply depressing that there are still people like this in the world.

Depending on my military service I either have to look this or next fall for a flat in Vienna (hopefully sooner than later). And the multicultural aspect was one of the things I am actually looking forward too to have in Vienna. I mean imagine a country without influences from other countries, how boring would that be? It's sad so many people here are so closed minded and good that the few people from Vienna I know are nothing like that real estate guy.

Steve really will look like a terrorist if dressed in right costume, hee hee. And an AK-47 in his hand will fill in the rest, but one thing is for sure, He will never do any violence as I know him, and he looks smart in beard too, so may be Uwe Boll after seeing him may cast him in the Postal movie.(Note : I hate Uwe Boll and somebody will kill this guy after seeing his horrible movise based on Computer games, eeks). If u dont know him take my word and avoid his movies like plague. Who gave him Doctrate degree anyway.

It's a sad part of human nature to fear, dislike, distrust or look down upon people who are not from your own tribe.. even "enlightened" cultures who have got past the colour of skin thing still discriminate on class, politics, religion or football team.
I'm a liberal who has quite bigoted attitudes toward anyone who is pro-censorship or anti-freedom, I would guess most of us are (as open source enthusiasts).
I wouldn't refuse to live next door to a patent lawyer though!
