Detox: gamedev.netters

Posted on:February 09 2007

Gamedev.net is offline for about a week now because of a hacking attempt it appears. How many people do you think are wondering what happened to that site? Many, I guess. At least according to the increasing amount of people hitting this blog via the google search term "What happened to gamedev.net?". Some user asked this even in the comment section of one of the previous blog entries. :)
Come on guys, I bet you can live without that page for one week. But I understand, you often only notice you need something when it is missing already.
Tip: There are some alternatives. I prefer devmaster.net and of course the irrlicht forum.

Yeah... and some people are hitting your site because they need to counterbalance that gaping lack of game-development related news, me, for example.
For me, the hardest thing is that all the developer journals I used to read are now offline and I don't even know the websites or real names of most of these guys. Btw: there's not much activity at devmaster.net and I have the theory that this site is a center for all the people who didn't know about gamedev.net.
Actually, if I was a moderator there, I would have immediately deleted any posts referring to gamedev.net ;-)

Seems that they are finally paying the price for using MS IIS instead of Apache :/

On a blog there's a downtime clock, As of this post, 7 days 10 hours. Is this the worst outage ever?

Well there are the people who pay a monthly fee for gamedev. Personally I would be annoyed as a customer. A downtime of one week is pretty bad for any site nowadays.

If the hacker(s) messed up the whole page and the gd.net folks didn't backup their stuff lately, I wouldn't want to be in their shoes now.

GameDev's back up! However, they appear to not give any detailed explanation/apology for the long delay. All I heard was something relating to the SQL server repeatedly crashing. Does anyone have more info on this?
