Google Translate is getting better

Posted on:November 27 2017

Is it just me or has Google Translate become much better recently? When I work on updates for my software (CopperCube in this case), I usually have to add a lot of strings, and need their translations into other languages. CopperCube for example currently is translated into 14 (!!) languages. It is usually fine for such specialized software to leave some special parts in english, but for most of the languages I speak, I translate them manually.
To speed this up a bit, I use Google Translate, and correct all the errors it made. Recently, I noticed that when I paste the english text into google translate, the translations for the languages I know are usually just perfect. This wasn't the case at least 2 years ago. I usually can just take the translation as it is, and don't have to do any corrections. Really baffling. Great work, Google!

They switched to a new translation engine based on deep learning: https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/27/google-unleashes-deep-learning-tech-on-language-with-neural-machine-translation/
We use their translation toolkit for our games: https://translate.google.com/toolkit/
