Direct Physics

From a job page at

The Windows Graphics and Gaming Technology group is looking for a software design engineer to join a growing team responsible for developing Direct Physics

Direct Physics? Nice. The death for physics middleware?

five comments, already:

owww…me like! Bring on the lawsuits by the physics middleware vendors! It’s about time DirectX had a physics component. I’m really liking their XBOX 360 controller for windows. I can’t wait to integrate it into irrMugen. :)

Quote from the page:

“An understanding of Havok, Ageia, MathEngine, Meqon or ODE would be ideal.”

Where’s newton????

Here’s another one:

“You will be a member of the core engine team who will be primarily responsible for working closely with our Direct3D team, helping to define, develop and map optimized simulation and collision algorithms onto data structures that are optimized for the GPU.”

So does that mean MS is going against Ageia HW Physics card in favor of ATI/Nvidia’s GPU for physics?

They might be interested in using the powah of the GPU to do collision-based vertex manipulations?

Anyone remember those old school DOS games where everything was destructable, and whatever you shot exploded in multicolored pixels? Real time deformation, I think it’s called. They might be aiming at that, or allowing similar visual effects.

why should this be the death of physics middleware? direct3d wasn’t the death of graphics middleware neither.

hopefully this will cause a similar open multiplatform project.
