Reddit now crippled by mods as well?

A reddit mod just banned me because I created version 2.0 of this free website editor named RocketCake and dared to submit the news. What has reddit become to?

I'm a reddit user for nearly 10 years now, and supporting reddit by commenting, posting and even spending thousands of euros in advertising on reddit each year. But I think I will stop doing this now.

Reddit is supposed to be a community where people up and downvote things they like or hate, not to be crippled by mods who don't know what they are doing. See what happened to the german wikipedia?

Crippled by mods, tons articles are now hopelessly out of date, technical wikipedia authors are frustrated. Hope reddit won't see a similar fate.

six comments, already:

You’ll have to pay an advertising company which employs the people who play mod. Or play the same game they do… have a lot of popsocket accounts and add a lot of noise between the actual advertising/bad-mouthing of competitors.

Could you say in which sub-reddit you tried to submit it?

I tried web_design, since I thought this was what fitted most, and I’ve been active there a lot before. Worst thing is, they just sent me that I have been banned by an not named mod, they don’t even tell you by whom or why. Don’t think that’s how it should be handled. Pretty unfair, especially when you see what kind of product spam is up there from time to time.

You can’t blame the mods for enforcing their posting guidelines. Being a moderator of a forum and subreddit I would blame you for not spending a few seconds to read the guidelines which clearly state:

1. Self promotion rules: Codepens, github/bitbucket repos, or useful code contributions are generally allowed. Tutorials which do not include commercial products or services, and do not include soliciting for services may be allowed, but are subject to rediquette rules. Editorials or perspectives should be limited to community blog locations such as, or posted directly to reddit. Blogs which include links to other services are subject to removal. Self posts which provide the community with useful insight are encouraged.

2. All other self-promotion, which includes invitations to check out your new site, are subject to reddiquette guidelines. We’re especially stringent on the 9:1 ratio.

3. No commercial/product promotion

One can’t be clearer than point 3.

With that being said, I’m not a fan of the general Reddit guidelines of not allowing self-promotion. What is the difference between me posting something and a friend posting something for me? The first one is not allowed on Reddit, the second one is, because it’s not “self” promotion. Mods who really enforce this because of the guidelines will, are just hypocrites. And then there are even mods who’ll take down your post if you suddenly get a lot of up votes because it’s something interesting, but you get blamed for buying votes etc.

Sometimes I wonder whether Reddit’s guidelines are for something more than just memes.

No, in this case the ban is ok, reddit is not the correct place to promote your software. There are subreddits to promote indie games (r/playmygame, r/indie*) and so, but commercial products from a company are not welcome.

I know about the self promotion rules, but the fact is that it’s not really enforced. Take a look at any popular sub reddit, they always have at least one or two product promotions on their front page, and most people don’t even realize that. Some people even believe those “my brother just made that, look” or “a friend just posted this on facebook” posts are real. The huge companies even have agencies with fake accounts, and it is pretty obvious to spot them.

Just use third person narration like in scientific papers :)
The author of this software would like to …
