Charity

Recently, I had an interesting mail exchange. Summarized it went like this:

A: CAN WE GET A COPPERCUBE LICENSE FOR FREE PLEASE WE LIKE THE SOFTWARE BUT THE TRIAL IS RUN OUT NOW AND WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE USING THE SOFTWARE

Me: Hi, nice that you like CopperCube. If the trial is over and you like the software, you are supposed to buy it, that's how it works. If you are a student or working for an educational institute, I can give you a discount, but I cannot give it away for free, I'm sorry.

A: BUT WE ARE A CHARITY ORGANIZATION

Me:No, I'm sorry.

A:YOU CAN NOT DONATE IT TO OUR COMPANY TO USE FOR CHARITY PURPOSES

Me:No, I'm sorry. What you could do maybe is gather some donation money and then buy it with that.

The interesting part is not the all-uppercase-mode the mails were written in, but that this was not the only guy claiming he was working for a charity organization and who wanted my software for free. Strange.

I'm wondering if this is a new kind of scam and if other software developers are maybe falling for this. I mean I am always open for special discounts and actions, but in a reasonable mode and not with such suspicious mails.. :)

eight comments, already:

Well, in case they do not only claim to be a charity organization, but can prove it (in a way that is accepted by your tax office) it might be worth donating them the software. The saved taxes are as good as every other money. But it’s often really complex to get refunds for donations to foreign organizations without subsidiaries in your own country.

I still think that time-limited trials are not the way to go anymore.

@hybrid: In austria, you can only save taxes with some very few chosen organizations which are favored by our slightly incompetent politicians, unfortunately.
@tazo: What do you think is the way to go then?

Hi,niko.it’s a long time that No updates for irrlicht have been given.i’d like to know if you have drop irrlicht, what are you doing now?
Terry () - 07 07 10 - 16:50

@Terry, Irrlicht is being actively developed, and another version is not far, and then there is svn for more updates. version releases of Irrlicht seems slower but I think last year they were bit super fast that is why they seem slow now due to relativity theory while it is normal :)

@niko, This whole e-mail exchange seems very suspicious to me. When does a charity started needing a 3D Graphics Engine. If they are so capable of making games and earning from them they have loads of open source alternatives already. For that matter why not use Irrlicht. And you have been on target list of Charity organisations who suddenly seem to be more worried about rendering technology then food grains. Really suspicious. hmm.

@terry: Irrlicht is updated usually twice per year. This hasn’t been changed much in the last years.
@kinjal: yep :)

Niko,
This message is obviously from some script-kiddie wannabe who is either a kid whos parents won’t spend the money, or one of the thousands of pseudo-hacker, pirate software self-proclaimed badasses that live in their parents basement without a real job to actually go out and buy software of value, for although they can’t do any better, they want to keep telling themselves that they could be if SOMEONE would just give them a break, maybe it will be you – when in reality it just gives them software to play with and never create anything substantial, but it keeps their mind off not knowing how to interact with women unless they’re on-screen, naked, and don’t know the grotesque little troll exists – besides, their hand and wrist are probably tired from excessive sexual self gratification.
